Jackson Rancheria is excited to announce that 1980’s hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa will be performing on the Grand Oak Ballroom stage on Saturday, June 20 at 7 p.m.

In the late 1980’s, hip-hop was a mostly male dominated art form, which is what made Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandy “Pepa” Denton’s emergence so significant. As an all female group, including their DJs, Salt-N-Pepa laid the groundwork for women in the industry.  The duo started rapping on a song Salt’s then boyfriend was producing for his audio production class at New York City’s Center for Media Arts. The song was released as a single under the name Super Nature in 1985 and because of the success, Salt-N-Pepa signed with the national indie label Next Plateau. Their first album, Hot, Cool & Vicious, debuted in 1986 with DJ Pamela Green. Salt-N-Pepa have had a number of R&B chart hits like the remixed “Push It,” “Let’s Talk About Sex,” “Shoop,” and “Tramp.”

Since their last studio album, Brand New, in 1997, the two disbanded and focused on their solo careers and family life. In September of 2005, they reunited to perform for VH1’s Hip Hop Honors. In 2007, the Salt-N-Pepa Show debuted and chronicled the lives of the two as they returned to the studio together. The famous Geico Insurance commercial is only the latest in the Salt-N-Pepa memoir and their only gaining momentum from there.

Will call opens at 5 p.m., doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Beer, wine, and food will be available.
